🔨 BLOG

I like to define poise as “having grace under pressure”. What a beautiful depiction of what it means to love and serve those around us when faced with difficult circumstances! Poise is about giving yourself and others the grace that is needed when things don’t go the way that we planned on them going. It’s not allowing a situation to take you off the path towards running the race that you are running.

A poised athlete is able to do 3 things effectively:

  1. Make better decisions

  2. Resolve conflict

  3. Be a calming presence in the midst of adversity

Poise not only impacts individual performance but also the overall dynamics of the team. A poised athlete can navigate high-pressure situations, make sound decisions, and keep their focus on the end goal.

Developing poise is a continuous process that involves mental conditioning, mindfulness, and effective stress management. Athletes can learn to channel their emotions constructively and maintain a calm demeanor even during the most stressful games.

The influence of a poised athlete extends beyond their personal performance. Their ability to stay composed can inspire confidence within the team, promote effective communication, and serve as a calming influence in high-pressure situations. Through their demeanor, poised athletes can help foster a strong team dynamic.

Here are 3 ways athletes can develop poise:

  1. Mental Conditioning: Use visualization techniques where athletes rehearse their performance under different scenarios

  2. Experience/Reflection: Find ways to put yourself in challenging situations. Afterwards, reflect on how you reacted and performed under stress. From here, you’re able to identify areas you can improve

  3. Prayer: Hand over your anxieties to God. Seek His wisdom and strength. Find peace in His plans.

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
