LOOK FOR THE GOLD

“Men are developed the same way gold is mined. Several tons of dirt must be moved to get an ounce of gold. But you don’t go into the mine looking for dirt. You go in looking for gold.”

- Dale Carnegie

I love athletics because of its ability to build leaders. The powerful part for coaches is watching kids step into a leadership role that you might not have expected to. One of the key aspects of building leaders is this whole idea of looking for the gold.

God has gifted each of our athletes uniquely. Our job as coaches is to do what Carnegie refers to in the quote above: “Move the dirt and look for the gold!” You don’t go into the mine looking for dirt, you go into it looking for gold.

Everyone has leadership qualities!

“Yeah, but not so and so.”

No, they have leadership qualities too!

They just might not be on the surface as shiny gold quite yet. It might take some digging. That’s what the coach is to do - dig!

What motivates the athlete? What drives them? What are the passionate about? What soft skills has God gifted them with? And maybe the most worthwhile question to ask: “Do they know that somebody believes in them?”

Do they know that you see the potential in them to become an incredible leader?

Oftentimes when we look at leadership, we see people that are good teammates or someone that communicates well. But that’s not all that leadership is about. It’s about serving and loving. It’s about being humble and hard working. Everyone has the capacity to do that!

The way that coaches build leaders is by creating a positive environment where everyone has an opportunity to grow and feel supported. This can come through providing opportunities for their athletes to serve someone else and by celebrating small victories along the way.

When we look for the gold in someone else, we are sure to find it.

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

To God be the glory,

Coach T
