🔨 HUNT DOGS vs. SHOW DOGS
This past weekend, College Gameday featured a segment that perfectly encapsulates Saban’s coaching philosophy, reminding us why he’s considered one of the greatest minds in college football.
For my SEC fans out there who might be breathing a sigh of relief now that Saban has stepped away from the sidelines, this clip serves as a reminder of the depth of his understanding when it comes to achieving excellence. Give it a watch:
Nick Saban; Do we have ‘Show Dogs’ on the team, or do we have ‘Hunting Dogs’ on the team?
Hunting Dogs are focused on discipline, commitment, accountability, doing the right things and getting better.
Show Dogs are worried about how they look and playing time.

“Hunt dogs” represent the ideal team members. These players are characterized by:
Focus on discipline: They understand and adhere to the team’s rules and expectations.
Commitment: They are dedicated to improving themselves and the team.
Accountability: They take responsibility for their actions and performance.
Doing the right things: They consistently make choices that benefit the team.
Desire to get better: They have a growth mindset and always strive to improve.
In contrast, “show dogs” represent players who may hinder team success. These individuals are often:
Overly concerned with appearance: They prioritize how they look over how they perform.
Focused on playing time: They’re more worried about individual recognition than team success.
Lacking in work ethic: They may not put in the necessary effort to improve.
Self-centered: They prioritize personal goals over team objectives.
Excellent teams prefer “hunting dogs” over “show dogs” because it helps create a team culture focused on:
Collective success: Prioritizing team achievements over individual accolades.
Continuous improvement: Fostering an environment where everyone is committed to getting better every day.
Mental toughness: Developing players who can perform under pressure and overcome challenges.
Long-term development: Focusing on building character and skills that lead to sustained success.
By promoting this mindset, any team can achieve excellence on and off the field.

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
